rhr039: LOVER! - "Man In The Woods" b/w "Foxhole Madness"

Review: "The Rich Crook vinyl offensive continues. The guy can't stop. Won't stop. "Man in the Woods" reminds me of a Beatles song for some reason. Like some march-tempo Sgt. Pepper's shit or something. A little bit 'o background organ gives the chorus a little extra cheeze. Par for the course if you've been into Lover so far. "Foxhole Madness" is the flip and better of the two. Acoustic guitar, bongos, some fireworks-streaking-in-the-air background breeze, a little storytellin' lyric. I enjoyed this one more for the change of pace/style than anything. Killer fucking artwork. This makes what, two LPs and like seven singles in under two years? Holy fuck. This one is cool!"

Release Date: June, 2008.
Pressing Details: 500 pressed, black vinyl.

rhr038: JACK OF HEART - "San Francisco" b/w "Ponytail #"

Review: "Piero (ex-Fatals, Go Go Players, Demon's Claws) and Benji from Creteens plus a couple other Frenchmen make up Jack of Heart, a more subdued outfit from some fellas know for the blown-out shit. I wasn't real impressed with any of their previous recordings, but this is the best of their stuff I've heard so far. "San Francisco" is a real majestic weird-Sixties slow beater with subdued vibes and whining guitar. "Ponytail #" is a plucky country number, that starts out sounding like a Teasers rip but actually turns out to be pretty pop."

Release Date: June, 2008.
Pressing Details: 500 pressed, black vinyl.

rhr037: THE HIPSHAKES - "Summertime Wonderland" b/w "Sympathize With Me" "Don't Leave Me Now"

Review: "First the Black Lips, then Carbonas and Beat Beat Beat—now, all the way from the UK it's THE HIPSHAKES live at Rob's House".

Release Date: March, 2008.
Pressing Details: 500 pressed; black vinyl

rhr034: THE WEAKENDS - "Death Ride" b/w "Small Towns"

Review: "The Weakends is some french punk, shitty no-fi blues courtesy of Rob's House, recorded/produced by Cheveu, so you get an idea of what we're going to be working with. You know that french garage rock scene that you've been hearing so much about? Right. They are banging away, singing through broken PA's, sounding like a way cooler hot rod, 50's, b-movie band then you ever remember, or they sound like what those bands should have sounded like, but they were too self aware or just never that good. This is being played in France? Seriously, these guys are not in it for the money. Small Towns is just a rocking little repetitive screechy fuzzed out guitar number, David or Simon is yelling, snarling about something, the drums can endearingly barely keep up, they make it seem so easy, but don't sound like dicks. Recorded with a barely working cassette player, heavy on the treble, please."

Release Date: March, 2008.
Pressing Details: 500 pressed; black vinyl

rhr033: BABY SHAKES - "Tell Me Now" b/w "Come On Babe" "Baby It's You"

Review: "Baby Shakes’ defection from New York City to Atlanta was always intended to be a temporary move. In 2006, the black-miniskirt- and fishnet-flaunting trio of Mary Blount (vocals/guitar), Judy Hsu (guitar) and Claudia Gonzales (bass) migrated south to concentrate on playing music without worrying about the high price of the Big Apple.

The fruits of their labor are finally starting to take shape as the group’s third offering comes in the form of a red, vinyl, heart-shaped 10-inch EP via Rob’s House Records. The packaging caught the eye of so many record collectors that Rob’s House completely sold out of the limited edition pressing of 600 copies before it was available to retailers.

Such high demand for a three-song record is an impressive feat for anyone, especially three young ladies who previously had only two singles under their belt. Carbonas’ drummer and producer Dave Rahn has spent the last few years moonlighting with Baby Shakes, which has proven to be a time of intense artistic incubation for the group.

Presentation of the record aside, the opening grooves of "Tell Me Now," the snap of the snare drum and cascading three-chord rock ’n’ roll melodies take shape with razor-sharp precision. As the chirping, vocal coos kick in, there is a sense of control over the song’s direction that is much more clear-cut than any of the group’s prior singles. "Come On, Babe" confirms the marked refinement of Baby Shakes’ speedy and sugar-sweet brand of pop and punk rock.

On the flip side, "Baby, It’s You" reels like an amped-up cousin to Dolly Parton’s anti-work anthem, "9 to 5." The bubble-gum-chewing beat of each song is absurdly simple, mixed with choruses that ooze heartbreak with stock lines about "dancing until the night is gone." But the direct delivery is refreshingly trouble-free. It’s the kind of giddy and girly pop one would expect to hear on a red, heart-shaped record – kitschy and infectious by design from every angle."

Release Date: March, 2008.
Pressing Details: 660 pressed; red heart-shaped vinyl.

rhr032: GENTLEMAN JESSE & JOSEPH PLUNKET - "If I Can See You (You're Too Close To Me) " b/w "You Ruin Everything For Me"

Review: "This is a cool collaboration between Jesse and Joseph in which each contributes a song and the pair hit the studio together to record in tandem. Each member of the duo compliments the other nicely, with both their song selection and performance; it sounds as if they have been playing together for years, and perhaps they have. With a couple of solid releases under his belt, Jesse is establishing himself as a bit of a craftsman. Here the two guitar tracks play off one another impeccably to form a captivating rock-pop melody. Plunkett's cut has an American rocknroll anthem feel, built on big guitars that climax in a blunt, chant-a-long chorus—"You ruined everything for me!" It's also worth noting that the pic sleeve montage makes for one of the sharpest looking records I've seen lately."

Release Date: March, 2008.
Pressing Details: 1000 pressed; black vinyl.

rhr029: GAYE BLADES - "Don't Get Married" b/w "Bobby Is A Lover"

Review: "Homo-a-go-go that puts the "gay" back into garage pop. Equal parts the Ronettes and the Undertones, these faux fags would rather fight than swish. The title of the single alone is worth the price of purchase."

Release Date: October, 2007.
Pressing Details: 1000 pressed; black vinyl.

rhr028: GAYE BLADES - "Whore Hunt" "Treat Me Like A Man" b/w "Pullin' Out" "Keep Your Hands (Off Of My Baby)"

Review: "In this recent renaissance where a band can form, record a couple of songs, have a Myspace site, a Youtube clip and an audience in a matter of hours, it is almost impossible to mire through the countless bands that spring up just as fast as they fade away. Like no other time before, we have access to the worlds upon worlds of great music, who's only goal is to entertain both the band members themselves, and the audience. The instantaneousness of the medium's reach grabs the meat from the edges, where the side-project bands, the weird image-less bedroom recordings, and usually the most artful, exploratory and genre melding music lays. And, like no other time before, has it been so accessible. You could now have a favorite band, who's never released a record, never toured, and you have no idea how they look in leather pants. That's pretty cool.
The most recent off-shoot side project from Atlanta, Georgia's Black Lips, The Gaye Blades came to a full head this past month with the release of their debut single on Rob's House Records. What started as a Youtube answer (see videos below) to fellow Black Lipper, Cole Alexander's acid adventure and bedroom mind bending, Zorbac, has spun into a bona fide band. Jared Swilley, Black Lips bassist/crooner, along with Bobby Ubangi, former member of the now defunct Rip Off Records band The Lids, spin out this instantly essential 4-song banger. With a schtick that conjures, questionably, if not provisionally gay, backwoods, and shotgun wielding cowboy roughnecks, The Gaye Blades hit out a couple of sing-along 50s greaser doo-wop prom-crashing anthems and hit it squarely on the purple head with an underground pop sound whose only rival would have to be the gay baby of Buddy Holly, Brian Wilson and a bong hit."

rhr023: SABA LOU (feat. King Khan) - "First Day Of School" b/w "I Want To Sing What I Want" "Physical Nothing" "Bella I'm Sorry"

Review: "Precocious debut single from the 6-year-old daughter of demi-legend King Khan. With her dad providing the sloppy fuzz instrumentation, Saba Lou delights with precious parts from Langley Schools Music Project and the Shaggs ... all slightly inept but still astounding."

Release Date: October, 2007.
